If you follow the Adriatic coast on a map, about half way down you will find a promontory: this is the "elbow" of Ancona and Mount Conero, a typical calcareous mass thrust up out of the sea towards the end of the "Miocene". It's a singular "break" in an otherwise flat landscape. Mount Conero (572 metres above sea level) is of enormous importance not only from the scenic point of view but also for its flora and fauna. On travelling through this characteristic area of the Marches, called "Riviera del Conero" you will find sun, sea, landscape, history and art. They are unforgettable images. Every season is wonderful but the colours of nature and genuine gastronomical flavours are to be especially savoured in Spring and Summer. You can enjoy Portonovo especially when the broom is in bloom, because - with its brilliant palette of colours - it can offer an authentic "wild" flavour.
This picture shows one of the jewels of the Riviera, Portonovo, a bay of acclaimed beauty, with the little Romanesque Church of Santa Maria (eleventh century), an old watch tower and a Napoleonic fort. Lovely seaside resort, very popular during the summer among local people, and renowned for windsurfing, Portonovo still mantains its environmental charm. This is possible because, as it's part of a natural park, building speculation has been prevented. As for accomodation, directly on the beach, you will find 2 campgrounds under the shade of scented pinetrees and 3 hotels. Portonovo is only 6 km. away from Camerano where our italian language school CENTRO CULTURALE CONERO is located. Upon request, we can try to find space for you directly in Portonovo.

South of Portonovo, towards the picturesque village of Sirolo, below the steep cliffs of Mount Conero you can admire the beautiful "Two Sisters' beach", which took its name from two huge twin rocks rising from the transparent water. This lovely beach can only be reached by boat or through difficult paths that descend steeply from the top of Mount Conero, offering breathtaking views. During the summer comfortable boats carry tourists to this beach for a day trip. Full immersed in the wild and primitive environment you will enjoy a relaxing day under the sun, diving into the clear sea.
For more active people, experienced and reliable guides organize adventurous trekking trips to the "Two sisters" starting from the top of Mount Conero.

Two other very beautiful beaches in the Conero area are the "Spiaggia dei Gabbiani" (seagulls' beach) closer to Portonovo and "Sassi neri" (black rocks' beach), a real paradise for those who love nature and where nudism is also allowed.

Sirolo and Numana are the two pearls of summer tourism; they are quite close to one another, but each has particular features of its own.
Sirolo is smaller and more intimate, offering stupendous views of the coast and of the mountain, while Numana with its long, wide beaches is richer from the historical point of view (there is a museum in which fibulae, vases and craters etc. dating from VIIth century B.C. are displayed) and it has had more urban development, though the upper and original part has remained much the same.
Tourists come from far and near to enjoy the beauty of the Conero Riviera: when they leave, they take home everlasting memories. This land is blessed by nature and by the sun, while cultural activities have also had a great deal of success: consider for example the summer seasons at the "Teatro alle Cave" (Sirolo) which attract so many visitors.
The hotel facilities combine comfort with family treatment that is typical hereabouts.
It is not unheard of for tourists to keep coming back for twenty years. What's more, there is the attraction of the traditional, authentic cuisine. Simple and tasty dishes such as lasagne, tagliatelle, stockfish, fish soup, roast and fried fish and delicious hors d'oeuvres all accompanied by local top quality wines such as "Rosso Conero" and "Verdicchio" are characteristic of the Conero area.
