Objectives The course aims at transmitting a clear awareness of European Citizenship and of Italy representing the cradle of European culture, starting from a vast Latin language basin and going through the diffusion of handicrafts and technical skills, widespread to all the surrounding lands. Because of its geographical position the area of the training event is also meaningful for its relations with eastern countries in the past and even now. Ancona, the Grecian nearby port town, has always been the "door to the East", welcoming merchants and peoples from faraway lands. Teachers will be educated to consider modern European civilization as the splendid result of a mix of local and foreign cultures, abilities and skills, and to disseminate the idea of democracy to their students, in a logical comparison of ancient and modern dynamics among peoples in Europe. The ultimate result will lead to abolish prejudices towards foreign cultures and to cultivate the values of peaceful coexistence among peoples. Moreover some of the eight key competencies for lifelong learning and adult education will be improved throughout the training course as digital and lingual competencies will be developed, together with a new cultural awareness. The seminar will include basic Italian language classes and written and multimedia materials in Italian and English will be distributed to participants.

Preparation Participants will receive a basic glossary of Italian useful words and sentences as a start for successive Italian language classes. They will be sent info material about Marche region, by email: its traditions, folklore, geography, history, arts and crafts. In particular they will be elicited to reflect on the grandeur of Roman Empire and civilization and to compare the modern evolution of historical issues. Moreover they will be invited to send back a list of expectations and questions concerning the course, so to "tailor" the seminar to the training needs of the group. They will also be asked to prepare a very short ppt. presentation about their own country, with a stress on history and traditions and to organize a "European Market", by bringing along items or typical food to share with the others, so to focus on the multiculturalism of the learning team and on the international dimension of the seminar.

Methodology An introductory phase, during which the trainees will be able to meet and to express their own teaching needs, will be followed by a series of lectures and subsequent visits to archaeological and historical sites, excursions to art cities and naturalistic areas. Much of the training will take place “on site”, every visit being tutored by expert professional teachers, who will experiment different communication codes. Each outgoing will be used as a spring board for educational purposes, by investigating on shared knowledge in the learning team and by arousing curiosity and desire for further information. Monuments and sites, such as open air museums, will lead to open air lessons and the places of interest will be exploited as informal learning contexts, for producing critical enquiry among learners. The methodology will be transferred to the different teaching realities of the trainees and will be made available for the diverse school subjects or students' age groups. Practical teaching skills and techniques will be presented as a guideline methodology, where education is based on the fundamental values of democracy and integration of diverse cultural contents and subjects, with a stress on the harmonious development and growth of the various civilizations in the Mediterranean Basin.

Follow-up After the training activity teachers will be invited to experience their own research action, by applying the learned methodology. Once back home they will have to plan and organize at least one outgoing to a local site of cultural interest with their own class group, in order to create an educational trail and plan their own teaching unit by following the suggested step by step guideline, to be used as a tool. Then they will write down a self-evaluation card: project phases, problems met, students' feedback etc. The informative material will be sent to the providers of training and shared with all the trainees, to optimize intercultural learning.
