We can safely say that
Camerano stands as a small but precious jewel, beautifully set in one of
the most picturesque and rich landscapes of "Marches" region.
This little town can be regarded as a highly representative miniature of
"Marches", whose envied characteristics have been preserved
unspoiled and untainted. First of all, its wonderful location, on top of
a hill overlooking the sea, Mount Conero, the Appennins and the
surrounding countryside, serves as a starting point for naturalistic as
well as cultural excursions. Camerano is the ideal place for those who
want to avoid mass tourism, but at the same time be close
to all natural and cultural resources of the area.
Beside its cultural and artistic beauties, Camerano is very close (10 minutes by bus) to some of the most striking and beautiful beaches of the Adriatic coast. It offers the possibility of excursions and trekking in fascinating places, thus allowing the participants to easily combine study, recreation, and relaxation. Upon request, C.C.C. will organize visits and tours to the most renowned and famous places in the area over the weekends and during the afternoons. |

Historical overview: Camerano,
originally known as "Cameranum", or "Camuran",
or simply "Camburan" as it is still called nowadays in the
local dialect, has very ancient origins.
The first human settlements in the area where Camerano is now located, date back
to the period between 7th and 6th millennium B.C.: the
ancient "Piceni" were the first inhabitants of the area, later
replaced by the Romans.
In the Middle Ages, between the 8th and 9th century, the
whole territory around Ancona became part of Bizantine "Pentapoli".
Camerano's area was divided into several districts owned by the Church. The
first documents where the name "Castrum Camurani" (castle of
Camerano) appears date from 1177. In 1198, Camerano first became an independent
Commune, part of the Commune League created to resist against Marcovaldo, sent
by Henry the sixth.
San Francesco Church (see photo below) was most probably founded in 1215. From
the 13th to the 15th century, the town lost its
independency and came under the jurisdiction of Frederick the second of Svevia
first and under Ancona's later.
From 1797 al 1798, Camerano was ruled by Napoleon's troops; after his defeat,
the local tradition tells of a short visit paid by the English admiral Horatio
Nelson.
In 1860, after the battle of "Castelfidardo" ended with the defeat of
the Pontifician army, Camerano was occupied by Savoia troops and was annexed a
year later to the Kingdom of Italy.
During the Second World War, Camerano was occupied by the German troops in 1943
and afterwards liberated by the Allies in July 1944: the town suffered great
damages, as it was the target of several air raids.
In the post-war period Camerano underwent great industrial and economic
development: one example is the worldwide famous musical instrument factory
"Farfisa", founded in 1964.

San Francesco Church: The local tradition attributes
the foundation of this church to San Francis himself, in 1215. The church still
features the original impressive stone portal of the 13th century.
Inside you can find paintings by Marco Vannetti, disciple of Maratti (famous
painter from Camerano; 1625-1713).
Worth seeing is the attached convent with its characteristic cloister and the
impressive monastery founded by the Conventual Fathers (1763), which later
became the seat of the Municipality.
